What is a letter of instruction?
A letter of instruction is a simple, informal document that helps guide your executor and family by filling in the gaps that your will might not cover. It can list where to find important documents and assets, note sentimental items you'd like to pass down, and include personal messages for your loved ones. While it’s not legally binding, updating it regularly can make things easier for everyone and help ensure your wishes are carried out smoothly.
Prompts to consider when writing a letter of instruction:
- Where are important documents stored?
- Where are the passwords or access instructions for your digital accounts stored?
- Do you have instructions for the care or guardianship of children or pets?
- Are there any outstanding debts (loans, mortgages, credit cards) that need to be addressed?
- What should be done with your social media accounts and other online profiles?
- Who are the key financial professionals handling your affairs?
Uploading your letter of instruction to Trust & Will
If you choose to write a letter of instruction, you can upload it to your Trust & Will account and designate a legacy contact, who will gain access to your uploaded files (including your letter of instruction) upon your death.
