How to Edit Information in Your Estate Plan Documents

You can't make direct edits to the final PDF documents, but you can easily edit your Estate Plan from within your Trust & Will account, and your digital PDF documents will update automatically.

(Note: Power of Attorney documents are the one exception — see below.)

How to edit your Estate Plan documents

Follow these steps after logging into your account:

  1. Click Documents from the left-hand menu bar, then select the Summary tab at the top.
  2. Scroll down to the section you'd like to update and click Edit in the top right corner of that section. This opens the questionnaire to the relevant section.
  3. Make your changes and click Save & Continue to save as you go.
  4. Click Return to Home.
  5. Click Documents from the left-hand menu bar, then select the Documents tab to review your updated legal documents.

Once you've made your changes, you can download and print the latest version, or request a shipment of the updated documents (Note: charges may apply for shipping).

What parts of my Trust or Will can I change?

You can edit any of the information from the questionnaire you completed when you first created your Estate Plan, including:

  • Basic information — name, email, relationship status, children, state
  • Guardians — Primary and Backup, for children or pets
  • Assets — Real estate, financial accounts, vehicles, etc. (these are typically easier to edit directly from your Estate Inventory tab)
  • DistributionsBeneficiaries, Exclusions, Executors, Gifts, Charitable Donations, etc.
  • Final Arrangements — Resting Place, Ceremony, and any special instructions
  • Health care — Primary and Backup Health Care Agents, care instructions, organ donation, access to medical records, etc.

Power of Attorney is different

Because Power of Attorney documents involve a wide range of state-specific powers, our POA form is intentionally designed to be completed by hand, so you can thoughtfully review and select the options that best fit your needs. We provide a template and instructions to guide you through it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to re-sign or re-notarize my documents after editing? In most cases, yes. You can still make changes to your documents after they've been signed, but once you do, you'll need to re-print or re-ship the updated documents and sign and notarize them again.

The one exception is asset information. If, for example, you buy a new home and want to add it, you can simply log in, add the property, and re-print your Estate Plan report (or Schedule of Assets, for a Trust) to replace the old one. This document isn't legally binding, so it can be replaced without re-signing or re-notarizing.

Is there a limit to how many times I can edit my documents? No, you can edit as many times as you'd like. Just make sure the most current version is signed and notarized according to the instructions, and stored somewhere safe.

If I already requested a printed/shipped copy, does editing update that copy too? No, physical copies aren't updated automatically, so you'll need to re-print or re-ship your documents after making changes.
